The most common chlorinator call we get in Manteca is a feeder full of tablets sitting on a pool that tests at almost no free chlorine. You fill it, set the dial where it has always sat, and a few days later the water looks dull and the tablets are barely eaten, sitting in a slurry of cloudy water that will not drain. The pump runs, filter pressure is normal, nothing looks broken. The problem is almost never the tablets. It is what the water left behind inside the housing.
Manteca tap water is hard. Calcium hardness and total alkalinity both come out high, which drives pH up on its own and lays scale on tile, inside heaters, and in every narrow passage a feeder depends on. A tablet chlorinator works by letting a controlled trickle of water pass over the tablet stack and carry dissolved chlorine back into the return line. Narrow that passage with a rind of calcium and the trickle drops to almost nothing. The tablets then sit in stagnant, highly acidic water, the housing corrodes from the inside, and the pool starves while the feeder still looks full. Orchard dust and pollen settle into the same fittings from the other direction, so feeders here clog from both ends at once.

Most feeder calls in Manteca come down to a short list of failures. Each one has a specific fix, and knowing which is which usually saves you from replacing a unit that only needed an hour of work.
A clogged feed path on an in-line chlorinator. Feed water enters through a small port, passes the tablet stack, and exits through an even smaller one. Scale builds at both ends and inside the internal cup. We shut the pump down, isolate the feeder, pull the cup and the stack, and soak the parts in a dilute acid bath until the calcium releases. The seat and the outlet get cleaned by hand rather than forced, because a scratched seat will never seal properly again. New o-rings go on with silicone lubricant, never petroleum, which swells the rubber and causes the next leak. We also confirm the feeder is plumbed downstream of the filter and the heater. A feeder installed ahead of the heater pushes concentrated chlorine straight through the heat exchanger, and that is a plumbing correction, not a repair.
A stuck check valve. Every feeder needs a check valve between it and the return line so chlorinated water cannot back up into the pump and heater when the system shuts off. They fail two ways. Scale locks the flapper open, which lets concentrated chlorine sit against copper heat exchanger tubing overnight, or debris holds it partly closed and the feeder never gets flow. A check valve locked open is the quiet killer of heaters around here, and it is an inexpensive part to replace once we find it.
A cracked lid or a flattened seal. Manteca runs 95 degrees and up through most of July and August, and feeder lids that sit uncovered from late May into October go chalky and brittle, then split at the thread. A lid that no longer holds pressure lets chlorine gas escape, and that gas corrodes everything within a few feet of it, including the union nuts holding the feeder in place. We replace the lid and the seal together, because a new seal under an old warped lid buys a month at most.
A dial that no longer means anything. On an erosion feeder the dial only meters how much water crosses the tablets, so output moves with pump flow. Drop a variable speed pump to a low overnight rpm and the feeder can stop dosing entirely while the dial still reads the same number. We set feed rate against the schedule the pump actually runs, not against the label.
Calcified dosing lines and worn pump tubing. On liquid chlorine and acid feed systems, the injection fitting at the return is where scale and reaction product collect first. We pull the injector, clear it, and check the tubing run back to the peristaltic head. Peristaltic tubing is a wear part. It flattens where the rollers ride, and output falls off long before it bursts, which is why most people never catch it. The pump still sounds like it is working. We replace the tube, verify real output with a timed draw instead of trusting the number on the dial, and set the feed rate against the actual chlorine demand of your pool.

The instinct when chlorine reads low is to open the dial. That works for a week and then creates a second problem that is harder to undo. Tablet chlorine is trichlor, and trichlor is both acidic and stabilized. Every tablet you dissolve pushes pH down and adds cyanuric acid to the water. In a Manteca pool already fighting high alkalinity and rising pH from the tap, a little of that is useful. A lot of it is not. Cyanuric acid does not evaporate, it does not filter out, and it does not burn off. It leaves only by draining and refilling. Once it climbs past the range your chlorine can work in, the free chlorine reading looks fine on paper while the water turns cloudy and algae keeps coming back.
So the first thing we do on a feeder call is test the whole panel, not just chlorine. If stabilizer is already high, the answer is not a wider dial. It may be a partial drain, a move to liquid chlorine on a feed pump, or a rebalance so the chlorine you already have can do its job. If pH rides high and scale keeps returning at the tile line, that points at alkalinity and calcium, and we would rather correct the water chemistry than keep repairing feeders that keep calcifying. Acid feeders get the same scrutiny in the other direction. One running unchecked will drive pH low enough to etch plaster and attack heater components, and on older plaster pools that damage shows up quickly.
We service chlorinators and chemical feeders on both older plaster pools and newer pebble finish pools, and the two behave differently. Aged plaster is more sensitive to a low pH swing from an acid feeder or an over-fed tablet stack. Pebble handles chemistry better but shows scale banding at the waterline sooner, which is usually the first visible sign that pH has been running high all summer. Sanitizer demand swings hard through the year here. Almond bloom and cottonwood load the water in spring, afternoon wind puts dust in it all summer, and leaf drop spikes demand again in fall, so a feeder set once in April will be wrong by August. Winter, when tule fog keeps water temperatures down and demand low, is the right time to have a feeder torn down and rebuilt. A part can be ordered without the pool going green while you wait for it.
