Pool Pump Repair in Phoenix, AZ | Nevergreen Pools

Nevergreen Pools provides pool pump repair in Phoenix, covering shaft seal leaks, worn motor bearings, failed capacitors, lost prime, cracked pump housings, clogged impellers, and lid o-ring air leaks, along with motor swaps and full variable-speed pump replacement.

Call us if the pump is leaking water from underneath the motor, if it is grinding, screeching, or humming without starting, if the pool takes longer to clear each day because the pump keeps losing prime, if you see cracks or weeping at the pump housing, if the skimmer suction feels weak even with clean baskets, if the motor trips the breaker or will not start on a hot afternoon, or if air bubbles keep showing up at the returns.

We work in partnership with Beyond Pool Cleaning, a pool service company based nearby. Call to get a technician scheduled, or book your first visit online.

Diagnosing and Fixing the Pump

Pumps on 1960s and 1970s plaster pools are often the original single-speed motors or an early replacement, while newer pebble pools usually already run variable-speed units installed in the last several years. Either way, we start the visit the same way: check the pad for water under the motor, listen to the pump run, and check prime before touching anything.

A shaft seal leak shows up as water pooling under the motor housing while the pump runs, and it gets worse as the seal wears until it fails outright and floods the motor. A pump that grinds, screeches, or hums without starting usually means either the bearings are worn or the capacitor has failed. We test the capacitor first since that is the cheaper fix, and a bad capacitor will keep a good motor from ever starting. If the bearings are the problem, the motor gets replaced rather than repaired, since bearings are sealed inside the motor housing.

Losing prime is almost always an air leak, and we check the usual spots in order: the lid o-ring first, since a dry or cracked o-ring lets air into the pump basket every time it runs, then the unions on the suction side, then the suction line itself if the leak is not at the pump. A cracked pump housing, usually from age or from old freeze damage, cannot be sealed and means the whole pump body gets replaced. Impeller clogs from palo verde pods, mesquite leaves, and wind-blown debris show up as reduced flow at the returns even though the pump sounds normal, and clearing the impeller usually restores full flow in one visit.

A motor swap makes sense when the wet end, the housing, the seal plate, and the impeller are all still sound and only the motor itself has failed from age or a bad capacitor, since a compatible motor can usually be bolted onto the existing pump body in one visit. A full pump replacement makes more sense once the housing is cracked, the bearings have already been replaced once before, or the pump is a single-speed unit old enough that the running cost outweighs a repair within a season or two. Once we know what is actually wrong, we give a straight answer on repair versus replacement. A single bad capacitor or a seal kit on an otherwise sound single-speed pump is a repair. A pump with worn bearings, a cracked housing, or a motor that has already been rebuilt once is usually not worth repairing again, since the labor on a second repair approaches the cost of a new variable-speed unit that also lowers the electric bill. Any full pump we install runs as variable-speed, programmed with separate speeds for filtration, cleaning, and spa if the pool has one, and sized to the pool's actual plumbing rather than swapped one for one for whatever failed. We also confirm the existing electrical can support a variable-speed motor before we install one, since older single-speed circuits are not always wired for it.

  • Check the pad for water under the motor and inspect the shaft seal
  • Test the capacitor before assuming the motor itself has failed
  • Check the lid o-ring, unions, and suction line for the source of an air leak
  • Inspect the pump housing for cracks and the impeller for clogs
  • Confirm flow and prime hold steady before closing out the repair
  • Program any new pump as variable-speed with speeds set for the pool's actual equipment

What You Get Back

A pump running right means steady flow, a quiet pad, and a filter that gets full turnover every day, which matters most from June through September when evaporation and heat burn through chlorine fast and the pool needs every hour of filtration it can get. Left alone, a small seal leak turns into a flooded motor, a slow prime problem turns into algae because the water is not turning over, and a clogged impeller strains the motor until something else fails too. A motor that keeps tripping the breaker will eventually take out the capacitor or the winding for good, and what would have been a simple swap turns into a full pump replacement. None of that gets cheaper by waiting.

Call to get a technician out to look at the pump, or book your first visit online and we will check the whole pad while we are there, not just the part that is making noise.

Standard pool service can be like visiting the dentist for a cleaning- necessary, but not exciting. It isn't until you find someone who truly cares about their craft that you realize how different it can be. Our pool isn't just clean, it sparkles. Recommendations for improvements are made, but not pushed. Service is consistent and my needs are considered proactively. Kyle's attention to every detail demonstrates the difference between a pool company that is focused on churning pools vs. the concierge service that comes from an owner who takes pride in their results. Highly recommend.

This was the third time we have had them come out to keep our filter running. This time we were under the impression that we were going to need to replace the pump for almost $4000. When Nathan came out, instead of just blindly changing it, he pointed out some minor things that needed to be done and only charged the diagnostic fee. We have had Kiani (on the spelling) and now Nathan out, and both have provided excellent service. Highly recommend this company!

Keoni came on time and was very professional. He was super knowledgeable about every piece of the equipment as well as the iAquaLink app. He not only got my system running, but helped me adjust the parameters to save money on electricity. He pointed out what issues might arrive in the near future and without trying to upsell just let me know what to keep an eye out for. I already have pool cleaning services, but will absolutely use Nevergreen pools for all my pool repair needs.

Jeff has great work ethic & most pleasant demeanor which is reflected in how the pool looks when he's done. I try to fill in between his visits but he makes that task minimal. We've been pool owners for almost 50 years, the first half of that time I managed the pool condition, the second half we've had it professionally done & Nevergreen offers the best service in this experience. The after-service email photo say it all & a nice touch.
