A Modesto pool runs against a hard calendar. Almond and walnut bloom throws pollen in late February and March, the shakers raise dust through August and September, leaf drop runs into November, and hot weather holds from May through October, which is six straight months of high filtration and heating demand. A controller that gets programmed once at startup and never touched again spends the rest of its life fighting that calendar.

Automation is more than a phone app. It is a controller and load center, relays sized to the loads, actuators on the diverter valves, low voltage wiring out to every sensor, and a communication path back to the house network. Set up correctly, it runs a variable speed pump at the speed each task actually needs, fires the heater only inside a window you choose, turns the spa over before you get home, and holds sanitizer and pH steady without anyone standing at the pad with a test kit.
Spring is pollen. From late February through April a fine film settles across the surface, loads the filter, and drives sanitizer demand up while nobody is swimming yet. The answer is longer filtration at moderate pump speed rather than short high speed bursts, because turnover and skim time matter more than pressure in those weeks. We build a temporary spring program, usually with the cleaner running before dawn so debris is off the floor before the skimmers do their work, and we set the controller to roll back to the standard schedule on a date instead of waiting for someone to remember.
Summer is the long stretch. Heat holds from May into October, water temperature climbs into the eighties with no help at all, and afternoon sun burns chlorine off faster than a fixed feed rate keeps up with. Filtration gets split into a morning block and an evening block, the heater gets a window so it cannot fire at two in the afternoon on a hundred degree day, and ORP sensing lets the controller chase real demand rather than a guess. If there is solar on the roof, valve control gives the system an actual setpoint and a high limit so the pool does not run past comfortable by August. That is why we program automation & control systems in Modesto season by season rather than loading one schedule and calling it finished.
Then the shakers start. Almond harvest through August and September puts a gray dust in the air, and a good share of it lands in the pool. Filter pressure climbs faster than at any other point in the year, and a pool still running an unchanged summer schedule will quietly starve its pump. We add a midday filtration block for those weeks, and on panels that accept it we wire a flow or pressure input so a loaded filter shows up as a fault on the app instead of as a cooked pump seal.
Leaf drop is heavy through November, so surface skim time goes up even as water temperature falls and total run time comes down. Once tule fog sets in and pools sit unattended for weeks at a time, the schedule drops to a winter minimum and freeze protection becomes the setting that matters. Every controller has a freeze cycle that starts the pumps below a set air temperature, and it only works if the air sensor is mounted in shade rather than on the sunny face of the pad. We test that cycle on purpose rather than assuming it is armed.


Plenty of Modesto pools still run a mechanical time clock, a single speed pump, and valves that get turned by hand. Those pads retrofit well, but the work sits in the details rather than in the controller itself. We look at the bonding grid and the panel first, since older equipment areas often have marginal grounding and no spare breaker space. Then the time clock comes out, a load center goes in, and relays get sized for the pump, heater, lights, and any booster on the pad. Older incandescent lights pull enough that they need their own relay, and color LED lights need a relay that can be pulsed for color changes without tripping the show sequence.
After that it is wiring. Actuators go on the suction and return diverters, each one gets low voltage cable back to the panel, and travel and end stops are set so a valve never stalls halfway between positions. A variable speed pump talks to the controller over an RS-485 communication cable, which is what makes true speed scheduling possible instead of plain on and off. Water temperature sensors seat in the return plumbing, the air sensor mounts out of direct sun, and the heater gets wired for fireman switch control so it shuts down and cools before the pump stops. If the pad sits far from the house, we plan the network link before install day rather than discovering a dead spot at startup, which usually means a wired run or an outdoor rated access point instead of hoping for signal through a stucco wall.
Water quality shapes the sensing side of the job. Much of Modesto runs on treated Modesto Irrigation District surface water, which is moderately soft and easy on probes and salt cells. Properties on outlying well water are harder, and scale builds on a pH probe or a cell fast enough that we set a shorter calibration interval and go over it at handover. pH and ORP sensing is worth having either way, because it lets the controller dose acid and sanitizer against a live reading instead of a fixed rate that is wrong half the year. On a salt pool we also tie cell output to pump speed, so the cell is not being asked to produce while the pump is loafing at low speed and flow is marginal.
Startup is where an install proves out. We power each circuit one at a time and confirm the relay, the label at the panel, and the tile in the app all agree, because a mislabeled relay is the most common thing we find on automation somebody else installed. Valves cycle through full travel in every mode, spa included, and we watch for a diverter fighting the plumbing. Heater setpoints and lockouts go in, freeze protection is triggered on purpose to confirm the pumps start, and pump speeds are dialed against actual flow and skimmer behavior rather than a number off a chart. We record clean filter pressure at each programmed speed so there is a baseline to compare against when the filter starts loading in August.
The last part of the visit is with the homeowner. We add the account, pair the app, and walk through what people actually do, which is heating the spa, running lights at night, adding a cleaner cycle, and overriding a schedule for a weekend without breaking it permanently. We leave a written record of relay assignments, pump speeds, and sensor locations at the pad.
