Hard groundwater is the reason most pool lights in Lodi fail before their time. The water that fills pools around here carries a heavy load of calcium and iron, and every time the level drops during a stretch of high 90s afternoons and gets topped off, more mineral goes in and none comes out. That mineral finds the light first. It plates onto the lens as a gray film that dims the beam, it builds on the stainless trim ring until the face screw seizes, and it works into the silicone gasket until the rubber loses its grip on the housing. A gasket that cannot compress evenly lets water into the fixture, and water inside a fixture is what trips a breaker.

The second thing working against a light here is the niche itself. Older plaster pools in the established parts of Lodi, the ones sitting under mature oaks and sycamores, often still have the original wet niche and the original conduit run. Years of vineyard dust off the tilled rows, leaf tannin, and cottonwood fluff drifting off the Mokelumne settle into the niche, hold moisture against the cord, and speed up corrosion right where the cord enters the housing. Why does my pool light trip the GFCI as soon as I turn it on?

A GFCI trip means current is finding a path to ground somewhere it should not, and on a pool light that almost always means water has gotten inside the fixture or into the cord. We start at the breaker and the GFCI device itself, because a twenty year old GFCI can weaken and trip on a perfectly healthy circuit. If the device tests good, the next stop is the transformer. Most Lodi backyards run a low voltage light off a transformer mounted at the equipment pad, and the summer heat plus the damp that rolls in off the delta at night are hard on an enclosure. • Nicked or brittle cord jacket where it passes into the conduit

An insulation resistance reading on the cord tells us whether the jacket is still sound or whether water has already tracked up the conductors. That one test decides most jobs.

Is it the bulb or the whole fixture?

Homeowners ask this first, and the honest answer is that it depends on what the water has already done to the housing. A dead incandescent bulb in a fixture that is dry inside, with a gasket still soft and a lens still clear, is a straightforward swap. We replace the bulb, replace the gasket as a matter of course, and tighten the lens ring evenly so the seal compresses the way it was designed to. That is the simplest version of pool light repair in Lodi, and it is the one we would rather find.

What we more often find on a pool that has been topped off with hard Lodi water for fifteen or twenty years is a fixture that has already flooded once. Once water has been inside, the socket contacts oxidize, the reflector pits, and the gasket seat on the housing corrodes into a rough surface that will not seal again. Putting a fresh bulb in that fixture buys a few weeks. At that point the fixture gets replaced, and because the cord is bonded and sized to the housing, the cord comes with it.
