Pump Installation & Upgrades in Lodi, CA | Nevergreen Pools

The groundwater around Lodi is hard, and that fact shows up inside a pool pump long before it shows up anywhere you can see. Calcium and iron ride in with the fill water and they do not evaporate out. They concentrate. Over a few seasons they leave a thin, gritty scale on the impeller vanes, inside the diffuser, and along the volute walls where the water changes direction. That scale narrows the passages the pump was engineered around, so the motor keeps pulling the same power while moving less water. Iron brings its own problem, staining plaster and leaving rust colored shadows near the returns that homeowners usually blame on the finish rather than on the water.

Then add the heat. Summers here run into the high 90s and low 100s, and a pool that warm needs long filtration hours to keep chlorine working and to clear a surface that collects vineyard pollen, dust kicked up by tilling and harvest, oak and sycamore leaf drop, and cottonwood fluff drifting off the Mokelumne. A single speed pump has exactly one answer to all of that. Full throttle, every hour, every day. It is loud, it costs real money to run, and the mineral buildup that hard water leaves behind makes it work harder still for the same turnover.

That is the job sitting on a lot of equipment pads right now. Nevergreen Pools handles pump installation & upgrades in Lodi in partnership with Vintage Pool Service, a longtime Central Valley company working out of East Yosemite Avenue in Manteca. Between the two crews, these pools are familiar territory, from older plaster backyards shaded by mature oaks to the newer builds out toward the edge of town.

Why does hard water shorten the life of a pool pump in Lodi?

The mechanical seal decides how long a pump lives. It is a spring loaded ceramic and carbon face pressed together behind the impeller, and it survives on a thin film of water that keeps it cool and slick. Mineral rich water leaves deposits directly on that face. The deposits score it, the seal begins to weep, and the water that slips past runs down into the motor bearings. Once bearings rust, the motor howls for a few weeks and then locks up. Most of the dead single speed motors we pull in Lodi failed exactly that way, not from age alone.

Scale handles the rest. A wet end packed with calcium cannot move the volume it used to, so filter pressure reads low, the skimmer barely pulls, and the pool starts holding debris on the surface. Homeowners add run time to compensate, which only stacks more hours onto a motor that is already fighting.

  • Impeller and diffuser opened and checked for scale before anything gets quoted
  • Lid o-ring and basket seat inspected, since those are what cost a pump its prime
  • Suction side unions and valve stems checked, because an air leak starves a pump the same way a clog does
  • Existing pipe size and pad layout measured, since that decides what a new pump can actually deliver

Do I have to buy a variable speed pump?

For almost every replacement in California, yes. Title 24 of the state energy code requires replacement filtration pumps above a small threshold to be variable speed, and it sets rules for the plumbing and controls that go with them. That is not a sales angle. It is the code that permits and utility rebate programs are written around, and it is the reason the single speed pump you bought years ago cannot simply be swapped for the same thing today.

The upside is genuine. A variable speed unit uses a permanent magnet motor, closer to a modern appliance than to the old induction motors. Because pump power climbs roughly with the cube of speed, cutting rpm in half drops the electrical draw far more than half. Running longer at a low speed moves the same water for a fraction of the cost. The noise difference is what people notice first. At filtration speed most of these pumps are quieter than the air conditioner, which matters on the cooler delta evenings when you are actually outside.

How do you size the pump for my pool?

Horsepower is not the number that matters most. Flow is. We look at gallons, the turnover the pool needs, pipe diameter, the number and length of the suction and return runs, the elevation change from the water to the pad, and everything the water has to pass through on the way: filter, heater, chlorinator, in floor cleaning heads, or a pressure side cleaner if there is one. That gives a target flow rate and a total resistance the pump has to overcome. Then we choose a pump whose curve covers that in the middle of its range instead of at its ceiling.

Oversizing is the common mistake in older Lodi backyards. A big pump on one and a half inch plumbing does not deliver more water. It creates velocity, noise, and wear, and it can push a filter past the flow it was built for. A correctly sized variable speed pump loafing at low rpm for most of the day is easier on the entire system, including the plaster and the filter media.

What actually happens on installation day?

The old pump comes out and the pad gets checked for level and for the vibration cracks that let a pump walk. New unions go in on both sides so the next service is a wrench job and not a plumbing job. We prime the pump, purge the air out of the suction line, and want to see a lid full of water with a clear basket before we call it wet. Every union, the lid, the drain plugs, and the seal plate get checked under pressure with the pump running, then checked again once the motor has come up to temperature, because a fitting that looks dry cold will sometimes weep warm.

Programming is where the pump earns its keep, and it is the step most often skipped. We set a filtration speed low enough to be efficient and high enough to keep the skimmer pulling surface debris, a higher speed for the vacuum or the in floor heads, a spa speed if there is a spillover or jets, a freeze setting for foggy winter mornings, and a priming ramp at startup so the pump catches every time. The schedule gets spread across the day rather than dumped into one block, so pollen and leaf drop get taken down as they land instead of sinking overnight. Before we leave, we walk you through the keypad and write the settings on the pad where the next person will find them. That last part is what separates real pump installation & upgrades in Lodi from a parts swap.

Standard pool service can be like visiting the dentist for a cleaning- necessary, but not exciting. It isn't until you find someone who truly cares about their craft that you realize how different it can be. Our pool isn't just clean, it sparkles. Recommendations for improvements are made, but not pushed. Service is consistent and my needs are considered proactively. Kyle's attention to every detail demonstrates the difference between a pool company that is focused on churning pools vs. the concierge service that comes from an owner who takes pride in their results. Highly recommend.

This was the third time we have had them come out to keep our filter running. This time we were under the impression that we were going to need to replace the pump for almost $4000. When Nathan came out, instead of just blindly changing it, he pointed out some minor things that needed to be done and only charged the diagnostic fee. We have had Kiani (on the spelling) and now Nathan out, and both have provided excellent service. Highly recommend this company!

Keoni came on time and was very professional. He was super knowledgeable about every piece of the equipment as well as the iAquaLink app. He not only got my system running, but helped me adjust the parameters to save money on electricity. He pointed out what issues might arrive in the near future and without trying to upsell just let me know what to keep an eye out for. I already have pool cleaning services, but will absolutely use Nevergreen pools for all my pool repair needs.

Jeff has great work ethic & most pleasant demeanor which is reflected in how the pool looks when he's done. I try to fill in between his visits but he makes that task minimal. We've been pool owners for almost 50 years, the first half of that time I managed the pool condition, the second half we've had it professionally done & Nevergreen offers the best service in this experience. The after-service email photo say it all & a nice touch.
