Water chemistry in Modesto does not drift at a steady rate. It moves with the orchards. In February and March the almonds bloom north and west of town and the pollen lands on everything, including your pool. In August and September the shakers come through and harvest dust hangs in the air for weeks. In November the mature street trees along the older avenues near Graceada Park drop leaves into the water by the bagful. Every one of those events changes what the water is doing, and a pool that was dialed in eight weeks ago can be well out of range by the time anyone notices.

Rebalancing is not one chemical poured in and a handshake at the gate. The five numbers interact. Raise alkalinity too fast and pH climbs with it. Chase pH without fixing alkalinity first and it bounces back within days. Add chlorine to water already carrying too much stabilizer and it barely registers on a test. The sequence matters, and so does knowing what your fill water is bringing in every time the autofill opens.
Bloom drops a fine organic load into the water starting in late February, and pollen is not just a cosmetic problem. It feeds chlorine demand and pulls free chlorine down faster than sun alone would. If the pool is also short on cyanuric acid, the stabilizer that shields chlorine from ultraviolet light, that chlorine can be gone by mid afternoon. Most Modesto pools want stabilizer somewhere in the 30 to 50 ppm range, and spring is when we verify it, because a winter of rain, splash out, and backwashing usually leaves it lower than the homeowner expects.
By June the water in an uncovered pool here is running warm and the surface is off gassing carbon dioxide all day, which pushes pH up on its own with no help from anything you add. High pH is where the real damage starts. Above roughly 7.8 the chlorine you paid for loses most of its killing power, and if calcium hardness and alkalinity are also sitting high, the water turns scale forming. That is the Langelier Saturation Index at work. A positive index means calcium wants out of solution, and it comes out as a rough white crust on tile, on the plaster of the older gunite shells along the McHenry corridor, and inside heater exchangers where nobody sees it until flow drops off.
Low pH is the opposite failure and just as expensive. Acidic water with thin alkalinity pulls calcium back out of the plaster, etching the surface and leaving it chalky and rough underfoot. Older plaster fails quickly that way, and once it is etched no chemical puts it back. A summer correction runs in this order:


Harvest dust in August and September is heavier than most people credit. It is fine mineral soil, and it settles into the water as a film that raises the load on both the filter and the sanitizer. Then the street trees let go in October and November, and organic decay pushes pH and alkalinity around while chlorine burns off holding the line. Winter fog and rain dilute the water further and knock stabilizer down. A Modesto pool left alone from September through March usually comes out the far side with low chlorine, drifting pH, and a stain or a scale line to show for it.
Fill water matters as much as anything you add. Much of Modesto runs on treated Tuolumne River surface water from the Modesto Irrigation District, which is moderately soft, so calcium hardness climbs slowly and topping off after evaporation does not load the pool the way hard water does. Outlying properties on well water are a different job entirely. That water is hard, and every summer of evaporation and refill concentrates the calcium left behind. Those pools drift positive on the saturation index year after year, and scale, not etching, is the recurring problem.
Some numbers cannot be brought down out of a bottle. Cyanuric acid and calcium hardness only come out by replacing water. Once stabilizer passes roughly 100 ppm, chlorine is locked up and the pool will not hold a reading no matter how much is added. Once hardness runs far past 400 ppm on a well fed pool, scale keeps coming back. In both cases a partial drain and refill is the honest answer, and the cool wet months are the right window for it, when the shell is not sitting in triple digit heat and hydrostatic pressure from a saturated water table gets accounted for before any plug comes out.
Every pool rebalance in Modesto starts with a full test panel instead of a quick strip read, because strips will not resolve cyanuric acid or calcium closely enough to justify a drain. We test the pool and the fill water both, calculate the saturation index from the real numbers rather than eyeballing it, and adjust in sequence with circulation running so nothing settles on the floor and burns the finish. Timing is the other half of the job. A pool checked in early February, again once the almonds have been shaken, and once more after the leaves finish dropping rarely needs a hard correction at all.
