Stockton has two kinds of pools, and the same bucket of chemicals will not treat both of them well. In the older parts of the city you find plaster shells poured in the 1950s and 1960s, many of them still running original galvanized plumbing, with surfaces that have been patched, acid washed, and refinished more than once. In the newer master planned areas on the edges of town you find pebble finishes, salt cells, variable speed pumps, and cartridge filters installed within the last fifteen years. Same water out of the tap, same summer, two very different chemistry problems.
A corrective chemical treatment is not a route stop, and it is not a scoop of shock thrown in on a Saturday. It starts with a full test of the water: free and total chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid, and where it matters, phosphates and metals. Then the dosing gets calculated against the real gallonage of the pool and the readings in front of us, not against habit. When someone asks for chemical treatment in Stockton, it is usually because something got away from them. The water turned after a week of triple digit heat, the plaster went rough and chalky, the chlorine will not hold, or the pool sat through fog season with nobody looking at it.

Take a 1960s plaster pool on the older side of town. The finish is porous by now, and porous plaster is chemically hungry. It pulls at the water, it holds algae down in pits the brush cannot reach, and it makes chlorine demand look higher than the pool size suggests. Many of these pools also have original galvanized or copper plumbing, or a heater with a copper heat exchanger that has been running on low pH water for years. Push a pool like that too hard with acid, or superchlorinate while metals are sitting in solution, and you get staining, gray and green and brown, that no amount of brushing will lift. On an older shell the corrective work runs slower and in stages. Sequester the metals first, bring pH and alkalinity up off the floor, and only then chlorinate hard.
Now take a newer pebble pool out in the master planned areas. Pebble is far more durable, but it is not neutral. Those pools are almost always on salt, and salt systems drive pH upward every single day. Combine climbing pH with Stockton groundwater that already carries a heavy calcium load and you get the scale line at the tile, the sandpaper feel underfoot, and a cloudy cast that will not filter out. The corrective job here is the reverse of the old plaster pool. Alkalinity usually needs to come down, calcium has to be measured against the saturation index instead of guessed at, and the salt cell needs to be pulled and inspected, because a cell packed with scale is not producing what the control panel claims it is.
The other split between the two is stabilizer. Older pools that have run on tabs for a decade are often sitting at cyanuric acid levels high enough that the chlorine is chemically present but functionally asleep. No amount of shock fixes that. Newer salt pools drift the other direction and run low on stabilizer, and in a Stockton July that means chlorine burns off by mid afternoon. Both problems sound identical when a homeowner describes them. Both get called "the chlorine is not working." They need opposite corrections.


Much of the city is on hard groundwater, sometimes blended with surface water, and that fill water arrives with calcium already in it. Every gallon added through the summer to replace evaporation leaves more of it behind. By August a pool that started the season balanced can be well over on hardness with alkalinity riding along beside it. That is the scale problem, and the fix is not a single chemical. It is alkalinity correction, pH held inside a narrow window, and in some cases a partial drain and refill so the calcium has somewhere to go.
Then there is what falls in. Delta breezes come through most summer evenings and carry dust, cottonwood fluff, and debris off the river. Mature trees drop hard in the fall. All of that organic load burns chlorine and feeds phosphates, which is why a phosphate reading is part of any serious corrective treatment here. High phosphate water will chew straight through a shock dose and go green again within days. Winter brings its own version. Tule fog settles in, the pool goes untouched for months, the pump runs on a short schedule or not at all, and by February the water is dead, the stabilizer has been diluted out by rain, and there is a green film across the plaster.

Plenty of pools need exactly one visit. A green pool after a vacation, a pool that got shocked wrong, a pool that has been chasing pH all month. Those get corrected, the water clears, and the homeowner goes back to a normal routine. Other pools are telling you something structural.
