Stockton has two kinds of pool, and which one you own changes how a filter job goes. In the older parts of the city, north and central, you find mid century tract homes with plaster pools that have been running for forty or fifty years. A lot of them still have original galvanized plumbing at the pad, a sand filter that has been rebedded once if ever, and a pump that got replaced piecemeal over the years without anyone rechecking whether the filter still matched it. Out toward the newer master planned areas on the edge of town the picture is different. Pebble finishes, variable speed pumps, larger cartridge filters, and equipment pads that were laid out all at once by a single contractor.
Both of those pools eventually need the same thing, which is a filter that actually fits the pump pushing water through it and a housing that seals without being fought with every cleaning. The difference is what has to happen to get there. On the older pool, the new filter is usually the newest part on a pad full of tired ones, and the plumbing has to be rebuilt around it. On the newer pool, the filter is often the only thing that was undersized from the start, and swapping it is mostly a matter of choosing the right element area and getting the unions to line up.
Local water and local weather do the rest. Hard groundwater across much of the city leaves calcium on grids and pleats, delta breezes carry dust and cottonwood fluff into the water most summer evenings, and the fall leaf drop under mature trees loads a filter faster than most homeowners expect. Then tule fog settles in, the pool sits unattended for months, and the filter holds everything it caught in October right through until spring. That combination is why filter installation & replacement in Stockton is less about brand names and more about sizing, access, and how the pad is plumbed.
The most common mistake we correct is a like for like swap. Someone reads the model off the old tank, orders the same thing, and keeps a problem that has been there for twenty years. A filter has to be matched to the flow the pump actually produces through that plumbing, not to whatever the previous owner installed. A cartridge that is too small for the pump runs at a high pressure differential from day one, the pleats pack, and you end up cleaning elements every few weeks instead of a couple of times a season. Extra filter area within reason is cheap insurance, especially on a Stockton pool that takes a heavy fall leaf load and a steady dose of dust off the evening breeze.
On the older tract pools we usually find a small sand filter doing more work than it was built for. Sand is forgiving and simple, but it filters to a coarser particle than cartridge or DE, and it needs backwash water, which is a real cost on hard water where every refill puts more calcium and hardness back into the pool. Moving from sand to cartridge is often the right call there. It cuts the water waste, it catches the fine cottonwood fluff and river dust that sand lets slip through, and it removes the multiport valve, which on a fifty year old pad is frequently the part that was leaking anyway.
When we keep a sand or DE system, the multiport valve gets evaluated on its own. Spider gaskets wear, diverters crack, and a valve that trickles into the backwash line while set to filter will quietly drop your pool level all summer. Replacing that valve while the tank is already open costs far less than bringing a crew back for it in August.
A filter is only as good as the connections on either side of it. Every install gets proper unions so the tank can be isolated and opened without a saw, which makes the next service call a twenty minute job instead of a repipe. On newer pools with modern PVC pads that is straightforward. On the older Stockton pools with original galvanized runs, we take it slower. Galvanized pipe that has been in the ground since the pool was built is often thin walled and corroded on the inside, and it does not always survive being unthreaded. We plan for that, and where a transition looks questionable we cut back to sound pipe and convert to PVC rather than crossing our fingers on a fitting that is going to weep two weeks after we leave.
The pressure gauge and air relief assembly go on new every time. A gauge reading three pounds off is worse than no gauge at all, because it teaches you the wrong clean pressure. Once the filter is buttoned up we run it, purge the air, and record the clean starting pressure on the tank so you have a real number to measure against. On sand and DE systems the first run includes a full backwash and rinse cycle to settle the bed or coat the grids properly, and on DE we charge to the correct amount rather than guessing at scoops. On cartridge, we run it, shut down, bleed, and recheck the clamp band, since the o ring seats slightly after the first pressurization.
We also talk through winter before we leave. Stockton pools go quiet under the fog, and a filter that was cleaned and left with a known clean starting pressure in November makes for a far easier startup in March than one that was packed with leaves and switched off.
