Green Pool Clean-Up in Stockton, CA | Nevergreen Pools

A pool goes green faster than most people expect. A pump that quits in July can take a clear pool to a solid green wall in under a week, and once algae has a foothold it consumes chlorine faster than a residential system can produce it. By the time the water is opaque and you cannot see the main drain, this is no longer a chemistry adjustment. It is a recovery job, and it runs in a specific order.

What changes a green pool clean-up in Stockton is the sheer range of pools in the city. Stockton has mid-century tract housing with plaster pools poured decades ago, some of them still on original galvanized plumbing, sitting a few miles from newer master-planned areas built with pebble finishes, cartridge filters, and variable-speed equipment. Two pools the same size, the same shade of green, can need completely different work. One comes back with chemicals in three days. The other is cheaper to drain.

So the first visit is an assessment, not a treatment. We want to know what the surface is, what the equipment can actually handle, how much organic material is sitting on the floor, and whether the water is worth saving at all. Guessing at that stage is what turns a four day recovery into a three week one that ends with a drain anyway.

Older Plaster and Newer Pebble Fail Differently

The hardest green pools in Stockton are the old ones. Plaster that has been underwater for thirty or forty years is porous and usually etched, and algae roots into that surface instead of simply floating above it. You can shock a pool like that to clear and still find green shadows in the corners, on the steps, and around the light niche a week later, because the algae is living in the wall, not in the water. Hard groundwater compounds the problem. Much of Stockton fills with high calcium water, and a scaled, rough surface gives algae more to hold onto. On these pools we also look hard at the plumbing and equipment before committing to a heavy chemical recovery, because original galvanized lines and a filter that has been rebuilt one too many times will not survive the run hours the job demands.

Newer pools are usually a shorter job. Pebble finishes are dense and give algae far less to grab. Variable-speed pumps can run long low-speed cycles without an ugly power bill, which matters when a pool needs to turn over continuously for three or four days straight. Cartridge filters pull fine dead algae out of suspension far better than a tired sand bed will. Pools like these often come all the way back on shock and clarify alone, even when they look hopeless on day one. The equipment does most of the work. Our job is to hold free chlorine high enough for long enough, keep the filter clean, and let it run.

Either way, the first visit answers the same handful of questions:

  • How deep the green goes. If the main drain is invisible from the deck, there is far more organic load in suspension than a bag of shock from the hardware store will touch.
  • Surface condition. Plaster age, etching, and calcium scale, plus any staining that will still be sitting there once the algae is gone.
  • Filter type and condition. A clean-up drives an enormous amount of dead algae through the filter, and a marginal one will fail in the middle of the job.
  • What is living in the pool. Mosquito larvae, frogs, and a floor covered in decomposed debris change the order of operations.
  • Stabilizer level. Cyanuric acid decides whether chlorine will do anything at all, and it is the number that most often points toward a drain.

Shock, Drain, and When Each One Is Cheaper

Cyanuric acid usually settles the decision. Stabilizer builds up over years of tablet use and does not leave the water on its own. When it is very high, the chlorine you add is chemically present but barely active, and you can pour money into a pool for a week with almost nothing to show for it. If a green pool in Stockton has stabilizer that far out of range, replacing the water is the cheaper option, not the drastic one. The same holds for a swamp with several inches of leaf mulch on the floor, which is common here after a winter of tule fog when a pool sits unwatched from October to March.

Draining takes some care in this part of the valley. The city sits on the San Joaquin Delta and the water table runs high in places, so a shell emptied at the wrong time of year can float or crack. We check the hydrostatic relief valve, pay attention to groundwater conditions, and drain, clean, and refill inside a single day rather than leaving a pool standing empty under triple-digit heat. On old plaster, a light acid wash will take off the stained top layer and leave a surface that stays clean afterward, but plaster is only so thick. A pool that has already been acid washed twice should not see a third. Pebble finishes almost never need one.

A chemical recovery runs a few days to about a week. Day one is debris removal and brushing, then chlorine goes up and stays up while the filter runs around the clock. The water moves from green to cloudy gray, then to a hazy blue, then clear, and the filter needs hands on it at every stage. Cartridges come out and get rinsed several times, sand and DE filters get backwashed as pressure climbs, and skipping that step is the single most common reason a do-it-yourself clean-up stalls at cloudy gray and never finishes.

Nevergreen Pools handles green pool clean-up in Stockton in partnership with Vintage Pool Service, a longtime Central Valley company working out of East Yosemite Avenue in Manteca, with crews already running Stockton, Lodi, Manteca, and Tracy every week. That matters once the water is clear. Delta breezes carry cottonwood fluff and dust across the water most summer evenings, mature trees drop heavily through the fall, and a pool that just came back from green stays that way only with steady weekly service and chemistry set for hard local water.

Standard pool service can be like visiting the dentist for a cleaning- necessary, but not exciting. It isn't until you find someone who truly cares about their craft that you realize how different it can be. Our pool isn't just clean, it sparkles. Recommendations for improvements are made, but not pushed. Service is consistent and my needs are considered proactively. Kyle's attention to every detail demonstrates the difference between a pool company that is focused on churning pools vs. the concierge service that comes from an owner who takes pride in their results. Highly recommend.

This was the third time we have had them come out to keep our filter running. This time we were under the impression that we were going to need to replace the pump for almost $4000. When Nathan came out, instead of just blindly changing it, he pointed out some minor things that needed to be done and only charged the diagnostic fee. We have had Kiani (on the spelling) and now Nathan out, and both have provided excellent service. Highly recommend this company!

Keoni came on time and was very professional. He was super knowledgeable about every piece of the equipment as well as the iAquaLink app. He not only got my system running, but helped me adjust the parameters to save money on electricity. He pointed out what issues might arrive in the near future and without trying to upsell just let me know what to keep an eye out for. I already have pool cleaning services, but will absolutely use Nevergreen pools for all my pool repair needs.

Jeff has great work ethic & most pleasant demeanor which is reflected in how the pool looks when he's done. I try to fill in between his visits but he makes that task minimal. We've been pool owners for almost 50 years, the first half of that time I managed the pool condition, the second half we've had it professionally done & Nevergreen offers the best service in this experience. The after-service email photo say it all & a nice touch.
